For the most part, they're interchangeable but there are limitations depending on the contextual usage.
Squander carries a bit more weight and gravity to its meaning. If we're to take money as an example; you could have tried to play the stock market but lost out. Your intent would have been to make a profit and so it would not have been entirely reckless. Thus, you would've wasted your money, as opposed to squandered it; whereas if you purchased lots of on-sale items in a store, without thinking about whether you wanted them or not, that would have meant you had squandered your money, as you hadn't rationally thought about how you were using it.
For the most part, they're interchangeable; but the above is an example of where you may encounter some contextual limitations.

Generally, "squander" is more often used with figurative or abstract things like "opportunities" or "chances" or "youth" etc but also sometimes "money"
The general sense with "squander" is that you start with a lot of something and then waste it.
e.g.
"He inherited millions from his father but he squandered it all."
"waste" can be used with abstract things but also more physical things like "food", "energy", "time", "money" etc

@Gejemica Ah, you've provided a more accurate and concise answer than me.
You mention a great point regarding opportunities and chances.
The only difference I'd say is that, with food, you could–as per my example–buy a whole load that's on sale, without realising most of it will go out of date before you can use it all up and thus you would have not thought rationally; so I'd put this under having squandered money.
Squander can mean that you start with a lot of something, but I wouldn't say it has to be a lot, just that one is careless, as opposed to someone knowing what they're doing but wasting it away.
