Because the last "wa" you wrote in Romaji is originally a particle.

originally, more than hundreds years ago（or one thousand), it was pronounced ha（は） .
but after that only the sound changed to "wa" , but we still use same letter は。
so we know the gap between letter は and sound wa (わ）。
nowadays some people claim we should chage the letter to こんにちわ*、 so it's really controversial matter.

RespostaNo, you are not. こんにちは is originally A SUBJECT, that's why it uses は instead of わ. That means, it is originally, "Today is"(maybe a good day).
