‘Put up an act’ or ‘put on an act’ is when people are concealing how they really feel, or they are acting. Some examples with explanations:

-“The misbehaved student put up an act in front of the teacher.” (The troublesome student doesn’t act troublesome in front of their teacher. Perhaps they act respectful and kind)

-“The sad boy put up on act.” (The boy is sad, but doesn’t show it. Instead he might be acting happy or angry instead)

*’Put on a show’ is more commonly used in English. ‘Put up an act’ still makes sense and is correct though! They mean the same thing.
