to sniff is to smell something quickly, example: I'd often sniff the roses on my way to work before leaving the house. snuff is a tabacco product that is inhaled, example : Fred was snorting snuff

Sniff is to smell something:
"you don't want to sniff that."
To use "sniff" in past tense, you would say "sniffed":
"I think I sniffed something bad."
Snuff can be used for tobacco, but it can also be used to mean "put out":
"Can you please snuff out the candle?"
