Pre-agricultural societies were said to be hunter-gatherers: they hunted for food or they gathered food that was growing in the wild. So half of "hunter-gatherer" is "hunter", and it is said to be the "juicier" half meaning that it is more interesting. The first half of the sentence refers to hunting, and the second half ties it to the well-known term "hunter-gatherer". "Hunting for dinner" is simply a more interesting way of saying "hunting for food". I think everything else in this sentence is straightforward and should be easy to understand.

@meektaste In this case, "more interesting". While they are talking about food, you can't assume that meat is necessarily juicier than whatever you can gather.
