Prison is long term. Jail is short term.
So if you are caught drunk driving, you might go to jail for a few weeks. If you kill someone, you will go to prison for a long time.

jail = the place where suspected criminals are held while the police investigate or the court decides their guilt; also used for criminals found guilty of minor crimes
prison = the place where criminals are sent after they are found guilty of serious crimes

Jail = state/locally funded detention facility. People are usually held here awaiting their trail. They can also serve time up to a year here. After a police officer arrests a subject, they go to jail not prison.
Prison = federally funded detention facility. Subjects only go to prison AFTER they have been convicted. This is where criminals who are found guilty spend their time (usually more than 6 months). Typically for more serious crimes.
