I'd like to know what "hanging onto academia by a thread" means in the text.
For a very long time, I was convinced that it was because of the hard work that I was doing well. But then the real world hit me. In the past decade, I’ve been hanging onto academia by a thread, no matter how hard I worked.

Hanging onto something "by a thread" is imagery that the only thing holding the situation together was a single thread, and if it were to snap, the situation would fall apart. Academia means education, so this sentence means that they're only just hanging onto their education, and it's very fragile, and they're very close to snapping/letting go.

In this case "academia" means the 'academic world'. Whereas once he was doing well financially as an academic (college professor, researcher, scientist, etc.), it is now no longer the case and he is finding it very difficult to continue this profession (hanging on to academia by a thread --> he is barely able to continue). So, he must consider changing his job/profession to something that is (much) more financially suitable - probably a job in the business world or government.
