Close to no difference, “about” is more commonly used though

I think the main difference is that "I never thought of it" means that you hadn't even had the idea before, and would sound more natural as "I never thought of that". On the other hand, "I never thought about it" has the idea that you might have had the idea before, but you hadn't really spent much time with the idea.
