Soaps, generally, focus upon day-to-day activities of people and deliver dramatic events (if, ofttimes, unrealistic in these events happen consistently to the people involved and border on the absurd); other tv shows center upon dramatic/comedic/action oriented roles of people that aren't the garden variety.
drama is your average korean dramas of like 20 episodes.
soap opera = 막장 드라마
