To explain this I'll start with the infinitive form, which is the unchanged form of a verb. This is the form that has not been conjugated. This form for breaking is "To break". In English every infinitive is preceded by the word "to"
To break means to ruin something. An example is when you drop a cup and it shatters into pieces. The cup is then ruined and you can not use it. It doesn't work as it should.
English conjugates its verbs into two forms, I will show those for this word below
Form one:
(they, we, you, I) break
(she, he, it) breaks
Form two:
(They/we/you are) breaking
(I am) breaking
(He/she/it is) breaking
Form two is called a gerund. A gerund is a verb that acts like a noun but is still a verb. How you form a gerund is you put "ing" on the end of an infinitive and remove the preceding "to".
Example:
"To break" = "break" + "ing" = "breaking"
