So.. I agree with this statement below, and this is what I would try to remember.
"In colloquial usage, the words jail and prison are often used interchangeably in reference to any place where people are locked up for a legal offense."
If you want to get more technical, this seems accurate.
"In most US states, jails are short-term facilities operated by local authorities, whereas prisons are long-term facilities operated by the state or federal government."

* I guess it sort of reminds me of college vs university. They may have minor differences in America, but a lot of people consider them to be the same thing, and thus use the names interchangably.

Both you’ve committed a crime. Think of it as short time for jail and long term for prison. Prison you’re serving time for a pretty serious crime. Jail you can be like held overnight for being intoxicated and then bailed out. Stay out of both lol.
