A and an are the same, you just have to use an when the next word starts with a vowel sound.
“A apple” should be “an apple”.
But “a fruit” is correct.
“In a” means you are physically in something- “in a car”, you are sitting inside a car; “in a house”, you are physically inside the walls.
“At a” means you are near the thing, but not inside of it- “at a car”, you are standing near a car, “at a house”, you are near a house.

An is used when you have a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) You would say:
Give an example.
I expect an apology.
A is used with pretty much anything else. Like this:
I would like a piece of toast.
I have a dog.
The difference between "in a" and "at a":
I am in a box. (I am inside the box)
I am at a box. (I am standing close to the box)
