'they lost in the italian cup final' is more proper and correct because its saying that the team lost in the competition/finals/game/etc which is the 'italian cup final'
meanwhile, 'they lost the italian cup final' is like saying they lost an item, they lost the label
but if you don't think much about it when you hear it, most natives would just probably understand either of the two since its thought is very similar to eachother
