Ho sentito che in "Scuola Superiore" c'è una divisione tra queste due cose. Qual è la differenza tra loro?

To say it in an easy way, if you go to a "liceo" then you have to attend university. At "Istituto" they teach you more practical stuff so you can start working right after.
Also, there is this belief that at liceo you have to study harder (I can assure you that liceo classico is hell, but I don't know about others).

There are different types of Liceo and Istituto.

LICEI
There are some subjects that are studied by everyone (history, math, literature, English, Latin, ...) but based on what type of Liceo you attend you will also get special subjects.

More common types:
- Liceo scientifico: focus on math and science.
- Liceo classico: focus on humanities. It's the only liceo where you have to study Ancient Greek
- Liceo linguistico: you have to choose two foreign languages (usually French, Spanish or German).

ISTITUTI TECNICI
I don't really know a lot about istituti because I attended a Liceo.
I know that there are different types based on what you want to do after.

The only one I know for sure about is "Istituto alberghiero": you learn how to work at hotels/restaurants. So you can choose between becoming a cook, a waiter or a receptionist.

There are other where they teach about accounting or about fashion or how to guide an airplane (in Rome).

After middle school you have to decide which one of these you want to attend but usually you have no idea and choose the one closest to your home. 😁

Il liceo richiede la prosecuzione del corso di studi in una disciplina universitaria. Abbiamo i licei classico, scientifico, linguistico, magistrale, che forniscono ampie basi culturali per poi accedere all'università.
L'istituto dovrebbe indirizzare subito al mondo del lavoro. Si chiama "istituto professionale" e ce ne sono di diversi tipi (ragioneria, istituto tecnico, alberghiero...) a seconda del ramo professionale che si vorrà poi seguire. Oggi comunque si tende in alcuni casi a continuare gli studi universitari: da ragioneria, per esempio, è consigliata la facoltà di economia e commercio.

di solito, il liceo è orientato allo studio, ci sono molte materie teoriche e poca pratica, perciò, ci va chi aspira ad entrare in un'università.
mentre in un istituto ci sono anche dei periodi di tirocinio, in cui gli studenti sperimentano nelle aziende il lavoro per il quale stanno studiando.

ovviamente, non si trattano di differenze rigide. una persona che finisce il liceo può anche decidere di smettere di studiare e cercare un lavoro, così come chi esce da un istituto può scegliere di iscriversi all'università

@Fabredolo Che interessante! In Brasile abbiamo "scuole tecniche" che servono per dare insegnamento extra, orientato al lavoro. Sarebbe una "scuola superiore" con materie extra. Qui, per prepararsi all'università, non c'è una cosa specifica, ma ci sono scuole di preparazione separate dalla scuola per il test di ammissione al college, il "vestibular" o "Enem". Questo test di ammissione è di tipo generale e generalmente non correlato a materie universitarie. Non chiedermi perché non abbiamo un insegnamento più mirato, come il tuo, perché ora me lo chiedo anch'io! hahaha

@Annika21 Wow, that's some amazing info you gave me there! It's always nice to hear (or read 😂) it from experience! It's interesting that both of them seem very specific to what they propose to teach, even though they have some general stuff as well. Here in Brazil everything is kind of general... In technical schools (I never attended one, but I have friends that did), you choose from a few different areas, almost always the same ones: Chemistry, Computer Technician, Physical Education, Math, Management, Marketing and 6 more areas. These are focused on both practice and theory. It seems to be close to the "istituti tecnici" as it was described. Unfortunately, we don't have something close to a "liceo" here. We focus too much on "entering" university... not much on preparing for its courses, though... In Brazil, it's hard to enter college and even harder to conclude it... also, our "scuola superiore" tends to be very weak, so people have a hard time adjusting to college life, in regards to the subjects they should learn. There are a lot of dropouts because of that, unfortunately, which makes having a college degree a feat for few here, 8,31%, approximately.
