At first sight, it's incorrect.
But on second thought, if we put "do/did" in inversion constructions like "Not until" and "Not only", why not in your case? Let's wait and see what others think.

This construction is not the same as "not until" or "not only". You have to add another clause for it to make sense.
Example:
"Not only did the burning plane fall, but it also destroyed a building."

I did look this up and fair enough it makes sense.
However, to answer your previous question, it's not the same as your examples of "not until" or "not only" or "under no circumstances" and others.
"Down did the plane fall" falls under the subject/verb inversion category intro adverbial, where inversion is only optional (and, in most cases, it's only to sound poetic). Whereas your examples falls under negative intro and that requires the inversion.

Hi sparklyglitz, this question turns out to be more interesting and complicated than I thought. My main concern is when we can use inversion without auxiliary verbs like "have/do". I've done some research on it and it seems to me that only after negative adverbials do we need an auxiliary verb. Let's see what others think!
