O que significa Not so much for the drinks as to make him turn away. ?

"Water...some water, please..." Not so much for the drinks as to make him turn away. I didn't want him to see me like this all these years. By the time he returned with a glass, I felt a little better.

This is a whole paragraph. The main character ask a barber for some water to make him turn away, because he doesn't want the barber to see him through the spasm of pain.

I think it means that asking the barber for the drinks is the best way to make him to turn away for awhile. However I can't understand the sentence structure exactly.

Do I understand the meaning of the sentence right? Let me know the usage of 'not so much as to' with some examples. (As a side note, the whole paragraph is from the novel called 'Flowers for Algernon'.)
