@kcjenny most people use them interchangeably however KarynCampuzano is right. For example it’s “the county jail” not “the county prison”.

@kcjenny It depends on the crime.
Jails are more for lesser crimes and the stay is typically shorter. It’s also used to hold people waiting for trial.
Prisons are for more serious crimes and longer sentences. Someone could be in jail while waiting for trial but, after being convicted for several years, will be moved to a prison.
