I have been struggling with the idea of "next weekend" and "this weekend" Say if my friend tells me on Wednesday saying " let's meet up next weekend." Does that mean we are meeting up this upcoming Memorial weekend or the following weekend?

"This weekend" is the weekend that comes soonest. "Next weekend" is the weekend after.

So for right now, "This weekend" is Memorial Day weekend. "Next weekend" will be the weekend after.

Yeah we get it wrong ourselves a lot too. It's a confusing thing, so if at all possible I'll just say something like "Memorial Day weekend" or just give a date.
