The の works change verb to noun.
勉強する is a verb phrase as you know.
勉強するの we can handle it as a noun(phrase). That's why the former sentence is natural.

toshis explanations is correct, and to showcase your mistake in english its like doing this mistake:
Study every day is hard. (here you are not nominalizing the verb, so its wrong)
Studying every day is hard. (now you turned study [verb] into studying [noun], in english you do that by putting "ing" at the end, in Japanese by putting "の" after the verb.
