we use both 감사합니다 and 고맙습니다 to older people or when you want to express your appreciation in a polite way. But we only use 고마워 to friends or younger people.

@yeahye012 thanks! are there different times where 감사합니다 would be better to use than 고맙습니다 or vice-versa?

Actually 감사합니다 came from Chinese character. And many Koreans tend to think Sino-Korean words are more polite and more sophisticated. So you had better use 감사합니다 when you say to your superior.
