When ordering or asking a check at a restaurant, should I ask a waitress who takes me to a table or is it OK to ask another waitress ?

It depends. Often, the person who seats you is the host or hostess, and they have nothing to do with table service beyond that.
Generally, when you ask a different server to do something for you, you are:
a) implying that your server isn't doing a good job, because otherwise you wouldn't have to ask someone else for something, and
b) you are taking time/attention away from the new server's customers
I would never try to place an order with a different server.
Your check example is very minor and would not cause a problem. I will often ask the most convenient server for other minor things, like if I dropped a fork on the floor and needed a new one. In such situations, however, I always try to let the person know that I recognize what I am doing.
Excuse me. I know you aren't my server, but would you mind getting me a new fork? I dropped this one on the floor.
Finally, you will notice I use the term "server." This is a gender-neutral term for waiter/waitress.
