Vote means that an action will be taken as a result of the preference shown in the vote.
Poll is just to get an idea of what the general preference is. No action will be taken, it's just for interest.

@aeth I'm just curious, is "poll" the exact same thing as "survey"? Or, are they situations where you would use poll rather than survey (such as an election)?

Hi laghmanc, a poll is generally a type of survey with limited responses, such as here are your options, choose A, B or C.' No detailed answers, no options for other answers.
"We polled 100 people, 50% chose A, 30% chose B, 20% chose C."
A survey can have more open questions, such as "what do you think of A?" "How many countries can you name?".
I hope I'm right here and explaining it okay!! If anyone disagrees please feel free to say so, I'm feeling less sure reading it than I did writing it.... haha!
