But to me
- Vertical is the opposite of horizontal
- Upright is the opposite of flat or in some cases, upside down.

Vertical relates to the axis ( imaginary line through the centre).
Upright relates to which surface is 'up'.

A line cannot be upright because it does not have a surface.
A bookcase can stand 'upright' because it has a surface plane. ( this is my own explanation, without researching anything!)

So a vase can be standing upright, or it can be flat on its side.
A plane flies vertically ( it cannot fly in an upright direction, sounds strange ) and it can fly horizontally ( direction).

Upright has a connection to standing on a surface. Vertical can exist in space or on a surface. The ladder is vertical or upright ( both is ok ) but they mean different things.
Upright, means 'facing up' or it's position in relation to the ground. Vertical means its position in relation to the horizon.

Vertical and horizontal can apply to lines we draw. We would not say ' I drew an upright line'. We can say ' I drew a vertical line'.
Upright relates to standing things like books, cupboards, or people.
