- Vertical is the opposite of horizontal
- Upright is the opposite of flat or in some cases, upside down.

Vertical relates to the axis ( imaginary line through the centre).
Upright relates to which surface is 'up'.

A line cannot be upright because it does not have a surface.
A bookcase can stand 'upright' because it has a surface plane. ( this is my own explanation, without researching anything!)
