This is correct. It sounds much clearer than number 3 or 4, unless you will be defending him. Are you speaking as his attorney or something?

6.I was convinced that he is innocent.

Same as 5.

Again, if you are compelled to justify his innocence, that means that you will actively be defending or justifying this person against guilt. If he have simply changed your mind the word justify does not belong in a sentence the sentence in this context.
