Questions about example sentences with, and the definition and usage of "Sports"

Sports Illustrated (a magazine) had a nice ​cover on the Astros (presumably a sport team) saying (quote) World Series Champions 2017​ mainly because of analytics (the use of statistics in sport in this case) (end quote?), and the Astros may be ahead of schedule (on achieving the championship?), ​who knows? (they are unsure)

It's pretty convoluted. I don't really understand it.

sports is a fun way of exercising.

A: Sports are usually something played again an opponent: soccer, golf, baseball.

A: not much difference. In the US northeast people more commonly say "sneakers", and in the west we more commonly say "tennis shoes", but all terms are used in most of America.

A: Sports store is more American and sports shop is more British.

And yes, those two sentences mean the same thing! It might be that it is different in the US and U.K. I asked some friends their opinion and it was split - some say “of” more, and some say “in” more 😕. Perhaps, to be sure, use ‘in’!

Because the word sports can be singular or plural and if you're only referring to one person or names of places, people, things or events so it must be "is" but if the word sports is referring to more person or referring to many then you must use "are". ->English books and Articles and Internet

Sports is Tanaka's favorite past time.

My favorite Sports are Kendo, Judo and Sumo Wrestling.

The Sports like Kendo and Judo are quite challenging.

A: Since good shoes can also mean formal/dress shoes, I don't think it's the best phrase to identify "sports shoes." Hmm..."trainers", huh? Honestly, I don't remember ever hearing any kind of shoes referred to as "trainers." Maybe it's an English (British) thing? Sorry about that...
