Questions about example sentences with, and the definition and usage of "Ironically"

A: When something happens but it's not what you expected, as in the complete opposite. Or, when a person is the complete opposite of what you expect them to be. This is what irony means.

A: Irony is just the use of words to convey meaning opposite to the words’ literal meaning. Like if someone says “there’s going to be a storm tomorrow” and I respond “oh, fun”, I’m using irony. I don’t actually think that a storm is fun.

Sarcasm is the use of irony to criticize someone or something.

“Irony” also has a colloquial extension to its use where it describes when something turns out the opposite to what you would think or hope would happen (a good example of this would be Alanis Morissette’s song “Ironic”).

At any rate, if you hear “ironically”, think “opposite of what you’d expect” in a neutral sense, and if you hear “sarcastically”, think “irony meant to criticize”.
