Shortening it to "what did you do with your friends?" would sound even more natural (because 'hanging out with friends' is just 'being with friends', so '..while hanging out' is implied). 놀았어요 might not be explicitly translated in this shorter version, but the overall meaning of 친구들이랑 뭐하고 놀았어요 is still there.

A: Hanging onto something "by a thread" is imagery that the only thing holding the situation together was a single thread, and if it were to snap, the situation would fall apart. Academia means education, so this sentence means that they're only just hanging onto their education, and it's very fragile, and they're very close to snapping/letting go.

A: I believe this is similar to the idiom - "on edge".

I think in this case "hanging over the edge" means he is feeling irrational, anxious and may not be acting with reason. He may be wanting to do something dangerous, spontaneous and/or desperate.

Think about how you would feel if you were "hanging over the edge" of a tall building. You might feel terrified, anxious and full of adrenaline.

or

Both are fine, but "chimes" is probably more natural. Also note the use of "its" instead of "the" in the first example.
