A: I think it's more nuanced than the previous response. The first sentence means you're likely to have to try multiple things, like "I would start by trying this, then I would try something else, then this, etc."

The second sentence implied you should start trying, but doesn't imply that you'll have to try something else next.

Yes they can be used alternately. And although I've never thought about it, "on my own" is just *slightly * more casual/informal than "by myself".

A: @MarcosC: by far is a way of emphasising. e.g. "it's the best by far" (it's MUCH better than anything else) or "it's the worst by far (it's MUCH worse).

So far means up until this point in time/until now. e.g. "So far I have only read half the book" or "So far I have visited two countries (but I want to visit more)". So far indicates that there is more of the action to do.
