Questions about example sentences with, and the definition and usage of "Anyways"

After all is often used when you didn‘t expect something. Anyway is more used as „in spite of“ e.g. „it is not raining but you bring an umbrella anyway“ (you bring the umbrella in spite of the fact that it does not rain).

In the first example the person talking was expecting rain, whereas in the second example it is a fact that it is not raining but that does not bother the speaker to bring the umbrella.

They are very similar but you still have to be careful since they are not always interchangeable.

A: @nekk: This is a colloquial dialect thing. In formal writing this is not acceptable in anyway shape or form. (This of course excludes writing publications where the intended "style" is that of a highly colloquial form. )

However, you will frequently find that what is grammatically acceptable is not always adhered to in the spoken language. For example, I know English grammar down to the smallest detail, but when I speak, I speak very colloquially and very often completely ignore definitive grammar rules. I use anyways very often in the spoken language because it simply "flows" better in many situations. You will even see me write it, in casual writing when I do not do proofreading. However, when I am making a serious blog article, or writing for a magazine, I would never use "anyways" EVER. I would have multiple proofreaders check it as well as an editor to catch mistakes like this.

Fun fact: In Old English "anyways" is used and is grammatically correct, and is the reason we have the word in our language today, however for whatever reason it gradually became weeded out of formal writing and now is considered to be completely wrong.
