Questions about example sentences with, and the definition and usage of "Am"

It sounds really fancy. You can do that with a lot of verbs.
Am I to wash these dishes? = Is it me who needs to wash the dishes?
Am I to walk the dog? = Is the person who needs to walk the dog me?
Are you to just stand there or to come and help me? = Is your duty to just stand there or to come and help me?

But as you can see, it conveys a sense of the person who "is to" do something is in a lower status of the other. So here, he's really mad and it conveys more of a "you expect that I am in a lower position so I will just take into fact and not get mad that you've..."

Thats why the responses are really like, its still your choice.

Generally, if you're just asking if your conversation partner can understand you something like "Are you able to understand me alright?" or just "Can you understand me?" sound less rigid.

Or, if you're asking if they understand the topic, something like "Does that make sense?" or "Do you get what I'm saying?" might be more appropriate.

But you are correct to think that elsewhere it can mean something like 'at the same time as' e.g. 'he likes studying to classical music' = 'he likes studying while listening to classical music'. There is also a Beatles lyric in 'Let It Be' which goes 'I wake up to the sound of music' = 'I wake up while music is playing'. The only similar Russian expression I can think of is 'петь под гитару' (correct me if I have got this wrong)

Since you have already answered the question, you would use "Did" which shows that something happened in the past, while "Am" shows that something is happening at that moment.
Since someone else asked the question, you would show their possession of the question.
