Q: There are many Vietnamese students must face with difficulties in learning English because their vocabularies and grammar are so narrow. Although, almost the Vietnamese pupils begin to study English from primary school (specifically, from grade 3) to the university as the main subject. There are the problems which they have to confront:
1. Environmental education in Viet Nam
a. Even though English is considered a main subject, which is important as Math, Literature. But, in fact, the pupils just get 8 marks in avenger at Literature or Math and not any other subjects under 6.5 mark. Then you can get the good degree. So there is not any motivation for students to try their best to learn English although they know that English is very important for them until then.
b. Almost the English exam papers are multiple-choice questions at school. Because of that, whether students learn or not, they still can have the chance to get high mark or at least you maybe get over 50% of scores. So that in fact, the score sometime can’t show your real abilities. In the contract with MCQ, toward constructed-response test such as History, Geography, Civic Education,… , unless you are study hard at home, you can’t finish the exam. All that are the reasons why students always ignore English and never try their best to learn it.
c. In addition, there are many students really like this subject, and they try hard to learn English, and absolutely they get good mark at English. But after graduate from high school, some students admit that they can only write grammatical sentences, while they are very bad at listening and communicating. Because of the curriculums at school, they all pay attention to learn new words, grammars.
d. The vast majority of state schools don’t have enough finance to engage foreign teachers to teach and they also don’t focus on speaking skill, that is a restriction of Vietnamese education. In fact, unless the students regularly cultivate in this skill, they may lose their reflex in English communications. Besides, some Vietnamese teachers mispronounce, so this can mislead the students about pronouncing and gradually form bad habits that are hard to break.

2. The impact of the mother tongue on learning English
It is difficult to listen right when you still don’t speak right. Correct pronunciation is not only make others people understand your meaning but also help yourself is knowledgeable the others’ idea. Some common mistakes in pronunciation with which Vietnamese students often deal such as:
a. Unlike Vietnamese words, English always have some ending sounds like /t/, /d/, /p/, /tʃ/. For example, with words are added suffix include: /s/, /es/ or /ed/. If you don’t pronounce correct it, those will misleading your meaning ( singular – plural or present tense – past tense )
b. People can or can not understand your words, which depend on you stress the right or wrong syllables. For example, the word “ Decrease” is Noun when you stress the first syllable /ˈdiː.kriːs/ and that is a Verb when you stress the second syllable /dɪˈkriːs/.
c. Because English has ending sounds so the English speakers often make liaisons when they speak. For example, a phrase “live in” is rarely pronounced isolated 2 sounds /lɪv/ and /ɪn/, but is pronounced as /lɪvɪn/.
3. The lack of self-confidence
The final and the most important reason which can interfere your communication skill is the lack of your confidence. Because of students’ pronunciation ability, mentality, reflex ability… they always feel shy and worried about making mistakes when they communicate in English. With the passing of time, the lack of your confidence and your own initiative in communication will become your bad habit.
