What is Modern Japanese Calligraphy?
East Asian calligraphy began its history in ancient China 3,000 years ago. Kanji was first imported into Japan as a language system in the 5th century. Japanese was an unwritten language originally. People invented both phonogram systems of Hiragana and Katakana to adapt kanji to the spoken word. The Japanese language system had developed gradually, and it is now known as one of the most challenging languages to master.
Many outstanding calligraphers had emerged with the times. They had broken the old stereotypes of society, created brand-new trends, and became legendary. The art that reflects the era and anticipates the new era is powerful enough to change the world.
A few calligraphers began to express abstractly before WW2. After the war, it became an art movement interacting with art informel, and Eastern beauty and philosophy influenced the Western art scene. However, such radical interpretations of calligraphy remained in a small circle because most Japanese calligraphers had valued preserving the tradition.
In recent years, calligraphers have come to think again about their uniqueness and what they should create now. It is more than being the "successors" of the wisdom of classics. Calligraphy is always the art, not just the writing technique. Isn't it natural now that we broaden our horizons to the contemporary art scene like how legendary calligraphers have extended the concept of calligraphy?
Modern calligraphy is at its most significant change in history. It is urging us to change. "Be you." soa natural?

Pure Shodo is an online gallery launched in 2019 to introduce a hidden gem of Japan, a vibrant modern Japanese calligraphy.
*I put “Pure Shodo” because it is easier for readers to differentiate that this is a specific name and made your brand stand out. But you can take it out.
Together with leading calligraphers, we will deep dive into the profundity of this art.
* “this art” itself doesn’t sound aesthetic. I would recommend you to use something like “artistic wisdom.”
Grammatically, it is correct though.
Yet, our extraordinary calligraphic artists are standing at the forefront of the era and seeking for the new horizon soaring above its tradition.
- “In contrast” should be removed. If possible, you should use other synonym. For me, it sounds like the word from textbook, academic writing for IELTS. lol It still looks great without using a conjunction. I personally prefer the word “yet.”
- No need to put themselves, it’s redundant.
- If you want to use the word “to soar”, you must use with preposition “above” like birds soaring above the sky.
- You can remove “by”
- Seeking for looks more aesthetic in this case.
Enjoy the fragrance and the glint of Japanese aesthetics, which exist firmly even in their bold artworks.
- You can remove the word “please” as it sounds very Japanese. This is a marketing ads, it looks better without it.
- I would use the word “bold” instead of daring. (Please refer to the image below)

Pure Shodo is an online gallery launched in 2019 to contribute to the vibrant art of modern Japanese calligraphy and calligrapher artists. We currently introduce four artists there, and more artists will come soon, through our network of many Japanese calligraphy masters. They create their Sho artworks as successors of the 3000-year-long history of calligraphy, and some of them broaden their horizons to contemporary art scenes as well, just like many legend calligraphers expanded the concepts of calligraphy in the long history. We introduce contemporary art on the edge of Japanese tradition. Enjoy the fragrance and the radiance of the aesthetics of calligraphy. soa natural?

Pure Shodo is proud to present "Modern Japanese Calligraphers:
Contemporary art with a glint of Japanese calligraphy from Japan to the world" as an online exclusive show on the world's largest art platform, Artsy from Saturday, December 14th, 2019 to Friday, January 31st, 2020.
Although Japanese calligraphy is already well known worldwide as "Shodo," we still feel that it has only introduced the traditional cultural aspect. Especially for art fans, there are almost no introductions of modern calligraphers who live today, except for a few of the calligraphers who have earned a high reputation overseas, such as INOUE Yuichi and SHINODA Toukou. Therefore, we established the online gallery Pure Shodo in September 2019 with the mission of disseminating and enlightening the cutting edge calligraphy to the world by our own hands.
All of our artists are also teachers who teach calligraphy. They have learned and absorbed about the "written characters" that has a 3,000-year-long history since the Oracle bone script used in the Shang-dynasty in ancient China. They are responsible for connecting it to the next generation.
On the other hand, as an artist, everyone continues to make an effort to find their expression that matches the present age. There are times when we hear the discourse that "calligraphy is not an expression," but our calligraphers who "live in their own way" are never heresy. History clearly shows that countless challenges have been repeated in the past, not only to preserve tradition but also to create a new tide by casting a stone in the heavy and deeply flowing history of calligraphy.
The world has changed as the Internet connects the world and allows information to be shared around the world. Many foreigners have come to Japan, and diverse society is realizing. The boundaries are expanding and mixing. Pure Shodo believes that it is natural that the aesthetics of creators who are calligraphers and artists are expanding from "calligraphy" to "contemporary art" in the context of these times.
